Message From Peter

Following up on the big news from the Newsboys (reported here), Peter Furler has posted a personal statement on the Newsboys.com website.

Peter writes,

There has been no band bust-up or punch-out! All is well! (Although now that I think of it, I did accidentally render Duncan unconscious one time in a play fight minutes before a concert!) For me, the decision is that after traveling many thousands of miles across land and sea for over 22 years, along with needing to constantly keep writing and reach production deadlines–let alone feed my dog, It was time for something to give, and my booking agent and his GPS drew the short straw!

Andy Needham

If you haven't run into my comrades of youth ministry, Andy Needham and Jon Mason at the many worship experiences they have lead here in New England, I wanted to make sure you were aware of the opportunities to see them coming up this spring.

Andy Needham has penned over two dozen worship songs that are shared by churches around the world. He has led over 30,000 students in worship over the past ten years. Andy’s band, Jonathan, Joel, and Nathaniel, are true partners who generously invest time, practice, prayer, and a good dose of laughter into this adventure. Andy also serves as Director of Student Ministries at Chapel of the Cross in metro-west Boston where he lives with his wife Bethany and two children, Josiah & Mercy. Check out AndyNeedham.net for more information.

Newsboys Update

It's official. Micheal Tait is joining the Newsboys on the road as the new front-man and vocalist. Peter Furler will remain the bands producer and work on studio projects from home.

Michael has been on the road with the band over the past weeks working alongside Peter in what has been a positive and enjoyable experience for both parties. It has been a graceful process that both Peter and Michael have worked through as they prepare to make the change in the coming weeks.

Peter states, “newsboys to me has always been a mission, and I entrust Mike, Jeff, Jody and Duncan to continue all that is in store for us as a band. I’m looking forward to focusing on the band’s studio career and spending time in my own bed after many years in a tour bus and hundreds of thousands of miles on the road.”

Third Day Re-Cap

The Third Day concert at the Palladium in Worcester, MA was a huge success.
  • The show was sold out a few days beforehand.
  • The Palladium was packed and the crowd was jumping.
  • The opening acts, Revive and Brandon Heath did not disappoint.
  • The audience was inspired to follow Christ for the first time or deepen their relationship.
Mark Lee, guitarist from Third Day had this to say about the show:
... we played in a really cool place tonight called the Palladium. It reminds me of some other classic rock clubs we've played like the London Forum. The Forum was the site of one of our best shows ever, and this show tonight came pretty close in a lot of ways.

Worcester Telegram Preview of Third Day.

The Worcester Telegram showed Third Day some love this past week, posting a cover story on Third Day's return to the Worcester Palladium. The article's writer Richard Duckett was able to speak with Mark Lee of the band and get his perspective on returning to Worcester, "The response from the fans was really tremendous," Lee recalled. Seeing, so to speak, is believing. "The music speaks for itself. When you see us live, you say this is a great rock band," Lee said.

Save David's Eyes - Benefit Concert

This is more of an FYI for us here in New England. Brandon Heath is going to be here in Worcester on Saturday night, March 14th with Third Day, so I thought it would be appropriate to share that Brandon, Jason Ingram, Matthew West and Tiffany Lee are participating in a benefit concert to help save David's eyes on March 11th in Nashville.

From Brandon Heath:

David Atmajaya is a senior at Centennial High School (18 yrs old). David’s father recently passed away from a severe stroke. David is losing his eyesight. He recently went to an eye specialist who told him he is legally blind and will completely lose his eyesight if he does not have immediate eye surgery. David suffers from glaucoma in both eyes. He has been paying $220.00 a month for eye medicine in an effort to keep his disease in check. Unfortunately this has not been working. David’s family does not have health insurance.

David’s teacher, Mr. Kirby (who saw the need and inspired the school & community to do something about it), has set up an account at Fifth Third Bank for those who would like to donate and help pay for David’s surgery. His initial surgery has cost the family at least $3,000.00 and he’s had follow up surgeries still to be scheduled. This does not include the balance due from the loss of his father and the hospital bills the family owes from David’s fathers stroke.

Details:
-Half the proceeds will go to David's family to offset hospital bills
-The other half of the proceeds will go in a general fund set up by Centennial High School to help another family in need. This ongoing fund will be managed by Mr. Kirby and his students and be used to help a needy family once every semester.
-Having an ongoing fund will allow Mr. Kirby and Centennial High School to give back to the community while gaining experience in running a non-profit entity

As David’s community, Brandon wants to come around him and speak as loudly as we can that we’re NOT going to sit by and let this happen to him if we can come together as his community to LOVE this family and let them know more than anything that they’re known and cared about. Brandon believes it’s through community that we can pull together to accomplish the bigger things God has for us that we can’t do for ourselves. Please join us for this event and be a part of that community!

No Limit

If you've ever wondered if the SoulFest has a positive impact on student's lives, here is a great article on a group of students from Franklin, NH who were inspired to start a band named, No Limit.

From: The Citizen of Lanconia

"We write songs to help teens get through the day and to not believe it when people say bad things about others," said spokeswoman and backup vocalist Annie Mclaughlin.

While the group considers themselves to be a Christian rock group and said they were very much inspired by last year's Soul Fest at the Gunstock Recreation Area, they describe their music as positive but not preachy.

Skillet Comatose Tour

Skillet will be kicking off The SoulFest on Wednesday, July 29th! They should be all warmed up and ready to go as they are hitting the road on April 2nd. The two time GRAMMY®-nominated band will launch the second leg of their “COMATOSE” tour in follow up to their 2008 run where 60% of the shows sold out, placing the tour in Pollstar’s Concert Pulse Top 50 Tours. Completing the bill and joining Skillet in 32+ cities will be labelmates and fellow rockers Disciple and Decyfer Down (full tour listing below).

Skillet has spent the last few months in Los Angeles recording their next studio project with producer Howard Benson (Three Days Grace, Daughtry, Flyleaf, P.O.D.), and with the “Comatose” album approaching Gold status and having just received GMA Dove Award nominations for Group of the Year, Rock Album of the Year and Long Form Video of the Year (for the critically acclaimed live CD/DVD project, “Comatose Comes Alive”) they are ready to hit the road. Following the spring tour Skillet will be headlining several summer festivals, including Creation, Agape, Red Letter Rock, Ictchus, Alive, Atlantafest, Summerfest, Sonshine, Hills Alive, Soulfest, Kingdombound, Newsong, and Disney’s Night of Joy, all leading up to the new release.

“We’re pumped up and ready for this tour to get started,” remarked Skillet frontman John Cooper. ”I personally have wanted a tour with Disciple for several years now and I think it’s going to be an awesome tour package. We have been working incredibly hard on this new record, so we are also looking forward to playing some new material for everyone!”
