(Jason DeStratis): You’ve been to the SoulFest many times now (I lost track of how many times). Other than the beautiful scenery, what makes this a special event that keeps you coming back year after year?

(Paul Colman): I LOVE LOVE LOVE Soulfest. I love the culture in New England. People are pretty straight up and honest and I like that. Plus I get a lot of opportunities at Soulfest that I don't get at other festivals. I'm not worried about over exposure at a festival. That's the concern of someone going for fame and notoriety. I'm not after that any more. I'd rather get a chance to sing and speak to as many people as possible.

(JD): You’ll be returning to New England this Saturday night, November 21^st. Without giving away too many secrets of the show, what can concert goers expect from your performance? Are you planning for some old favorites or planning to try out some new material on the crowd?

(PC): To me the concept of audience participation sounds cheap and nasty to me. I don't ever think that way. My audience are a part of my show because I need them to be. I think that they are most likely more interesting than me. And there are more of them anyway! So I guess people can except to be a part of it. I think I perform as well as they want me to. I don't really connect with music unless I'm performing to someone. I try and keep the talking on stage real and intimate and vulnerable. I like stories and sharing my story. I will hopefully sing all the songs people except me to sing as well as some newer ones and a couple of ones from my proposed new recording that I might test out.

(JD): It sounds like you may be working your way toward a new CD in the near future. Have you noticed a theme or something that God’s been doing in your life that will resonate in your next project?

(PC): My label is not really into me or my music right now so they're not going to pay for it and the marketing required to make it a success. I'm not to mad at them. They're my friends. I get it. I'm not a big seller in the christian market. It's ok. We all have to pay the bills :) I do have a lot of new songs and am keen to record them. I'm just trying to figure out a way to pay for a new recording. This new record will be based around Jeremiah 17:5-8. (link to Jeremiah at YouVersion.com)

Interview with Paul Colman - Part 1

(Jason DeStratis): Paul, thanks for taking some time out of your schedule for The SoulFest Blog. My wife and I have enjoyed your music for a long time, so it’s a pleasure to get to spend some time with you… even if it is in this virtual format. Your music career got its start in Australia. Was there a big break that helped to bring you into the spotlight or did your career mature slowly?

(Paul Colman): I started my first band when I was 11. We were together until I was 18 and we wrote about 50 decent songs and did about 100 shows. From 19 to about 29 I mostly played solo with an acoustic guitar and really worked on my craft. During that time I also went to University and got a Bachelor's degree, got married, did a variety of jobs and basically grew up after a pretty slow and painful start to life. After my 30th birthday, I started going pretty hard writing, touring, promoting and networking. I formed the paul colman trio and that was when things started going faster. We worked pretty hard n Australia and New Zealand and developed a pretty faithful audience.

(JD): At some point, you decided to bring your music career to the USA. Was this a gut wrenching decision, or did it seem like the obvious choice given the success of The Newsboys and Rebecca St. James?

(PC): Third Day asked us to come and open for them in the USA in 2002. We accepted and all moved to the USA. I lived in the US when I was 18 back in 1986 and fell in love with America. I was always planning on somehow coming back and now I had my opportunity. It wasn't a tough decision for me but it was and still is for my wife. She's a saint for putting up with me and my plans. Australia is a such a small market for just about everything. If you have international aspirations you will most likely need to leave Australia for ever or at least for enough time to establish yourself internationally.

(JD): I happened to be at a Winter Jam concert in Columbia, South Carolina in early 2006. I had seen The Newsboys perform many times, so I thought that I was familiar with their lineup. I did a cartoon-like double take when I saw Paul Colman standing to the right of Peter Furler. I was shocked for a minute until I realized that you were a natural fit for The Newsboys. You had a 3 year run with the band. What was it like to be a part of a legendary band like The Newsboys?

(PC): It was a shock to be asked but I was definitely looking for a change of scenery for a while. When you've owned, run and managed everything you've done, its fun to be an employee for a while. I was always 'the' guy in everything I had done from cover bands, wedding bands, original bands, duos, trios....you name it. In the Newsboys I owned nothing, started nothing, played guitar, did backing vocals and was very happy. I needed actually to detox for a while. I had become too driven and I also had lost my intimacy with God and others. Being in the Newsboys gave me a chance to get some great input, learn some new skills and take a back seat for a while. I left with a lot of life lessons under my belt, all the relationships in tact and a new determination to not run ahead of God again.

(JD): I’m sure you get an early listen to some good new musicians while on the road and living in Nashville. Are there any up-and-coming artists that you are excited about, or new music that is in heavy rotation on your iPod?

(PC): The truth is that when I am in Nashville I pretty much stay in a 10 mile radius around my home and am very family focused. So I'm a little embarrassed to say that I don't really hear much at all.

New well for Lukodi Village, Uganda - from Soulfest 2009 W4W!!

Our Global Benefit Founder, Mark Warren, met with Conrad from ChildVoice International a few days ago and gave him a check for $10K that will be used to fund a new well for the Soulfest mission village in Lukodi, Uganda. Global Benefit raised the remaining funds for the project, over and above the $5000 that was raised at Soulfest's 2009 Walk4Water (W4W). Conrad left for Uganda shortly after the meeting with Mark and will be in Uganda when the new well is drilled.

Talk about cool stuff!!

Mark also gave Conrad a HD Flip video camera to take with him so he can capture the the drilling of the well, and the story of how the people at Soulfest 2009 lived out True Love In Action by walking miles for clean water.

You may be wondering what exactly Boston Winter Conference is?

Boston Winter Conference happens once a year over winter break, just after New Year’s starting January 2nd and ending January 6th.. Hundreds of college students, like you, travel to Boston from all over the northeastern region and spend five days and four nights in Boston’s Sheraton Hotel to have fellowship with one another and to be challenged by God to go out and spread His Word.

The five days include several talks by some awesome speakers and workshops that are conducted in smaller groups and are meant to address some more specific questions you may have about your faith or sharing your faith with many different types of people. In addition to being challenged spiritually and intellectually in these main talks and workshops, there is some great worship happening each day and evening as well as a concert one night put on by a special guest band (Shane & Shane). There are also numerous opportunities for you to meet and engage with other college students from other schools in this region whether it is in the workshops, your meal times or your free times. It is really a great an encouraging time to see so many people like you be so passionate about showing God’s love to the students on their campuses.
